The holidays give people reasons to gather and celebrate the year. As gaming developed online followings and communities, one of the first ever online holiday events took place on Halloween in 2001 in the MMORPG RuneScape. Players were completely surprised to see pumpkins appearing all over the map. The creators were even handing out the tradable item in Falador Square.
After the seeing the success of holiday themed events, in 2008 RuneScape also was one of the first games with a Thanksgiving event. Ironically as a British developer, Jagex typically did not recognize the holiday, but went ahead with an in-game holiday event which featured a quest to find 10 turkeys hidden across the world. There is no official word if the event will return this year, but old-school players will remember that the surprise behind the holiday event was half the fun.
This week, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey, family gatherings, and football, several games will also hold seasonal in-game events for their communities.
Pilgrims Bounty returns to World of Warcraft for players to feast together starting November 20-27. With many cooking recipes to collect, wild turkeys to hunt, seasonal attire, and pets to earn. The WOW community has a lot to be thankful for with the return of this holiday event. Just watch out for the inevitable food fight!
Typically in-game holiday events happen in MMOs, but in a game with a built-in calendar like Animal Crossing, special events will always appear around the holidays! On the fourth Thursday in November, players are invited to join their town for Turkey Day! They also can expect to get a visit from the long-time reoccurring character Franklin the turkey. Players help the turkey chef prepare meals for a feast and collect recipes and seasonal prizes for their efforts.
Sea of Thieves is throwing a Feast of Bounty filled with challenges to earn gold, renown, and event themed cosmetics! The event runs between November 22 and November 25. Hopefully there is enough treasure and food to go around for everyone! Wouldn’t want anyone to resort to piracy during a Thanksgiving event…
ARK: Survival Evolved will launch Turkey Trial 6 from Tuesday, November 22 through Wednesday, December 7. Players can expect to see mega sized turkeys ready to be carved up into costumes and ugly sweaters! Or players can even summon the deadly DodoRex for a very interesting take on a Thanksgiving tradition.
Digital Extremes, the developers of Warframe, decided that they wanted to advocate for men’s health and will be donating to the Movember Foundation at the end of the month. Players are encouraged to use an in-game mustache cosmetic and tag a screenshot to win prizes.
The Movember Foundation enables thousands of research-based health projects around the globe to transform the way health services reach and support men, from mental health and suicide prevention to prostate and testicular cancer services. From everyone at Gamescribes, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
